A Faith-Based Curriculum

Curriculum Overview
Through our teaching and the support of our families and parish, we are dedicated to providing educational excellence, fostering Christian attitudes, and developing faith in our students.

Religion
The goal of our religion education is to give the students knowledge of the Catholic faith while instilling in them a desire to learn more, to be certain of God’s love and mercy, to love and obey, and to seek God’s will in all that they do. Liturgical formation includes daily religious instruction, weekly Masses and prayer services and outreach/service opportunities.  Students are actively involved in our weekly liturgies.

Language Arts
The language arts curriculum includes reading, phonics (K5-3rd), spelling, word study, handwriting, English and literature. While we strive to instruct the students on learning the mechanics of reading and writing, we also instill an enjoyment for reading and writing.

One of our exceptional programs is the Accelerated Reading Program which is an enrichment program that focuses on comprehension.  For a listing of all book titles which SJPS has accompanying Accelerated Reading tests, please click below. list can be sorted by Title, Author, Level, or Points

Mathematics
Our mathematics curriculum provides traditional instruction, which emphasizes mastery in basic skills and facts for accuracy, speed, and an understanding of the concepts being taught. It is expected that the students will learn and understand the necessary concepts and become confident in their math ability to assist in their future math coursework, in their chosen career path, and in their everyday lives.

Science
The science curriculum strives to awaken a sense of wonder about our world and how it works. Facts and applications are presented from a Christian perspective. Through textbook study, research, and hands-on experimentation, our science curriculum covers the study of earth, space, life and physical science.

Technology
Our state-of-the-art computer lab, with newly purchased computers during the 2006-2007 school year, enhances the K3-8 technology curriculum. Weekly instruction is provided by a computer specialist, which includes keyboarding skills, supervised internet access and enrichment of the core curriculum. Classroom computers are also networked, providing additional reinforcement of the technology component of our curriculum.

Foreign Language
The instruction of Spanish is offered to students in grades 1-8. Students are engaged in the language and culture, preparing them for advanced placement in this language upon entrance into high school.

Art & Music
Our goal in the areas of Art and Music are to develop the different dimensions of the human mind. Our students are taught not only to understand masterpieces of art and music, but also to use a variety of materials in creating their own works.

Social Studies
Our social studies program focuses on the study of history and geography while also promoting civic education. We strive to assist the students to think critically and analytically about past events, become active participants in our current society, and in being hopeful and courageous when carefully planning and preparing for our future.

Physical Education
In physical education, the students are encouraged to develop themselves to their greatest potential, whatever their abilities may be. Our curriculum provides activities that promote and maintain physical fitness, offer emotional release and enjoyment, develop perceptual motor abilities, and teach safety factors in regards to self, others and equipment. We strive to both role model and encourage good sportsmanship and constructive use of leisure time.

Health Education
Health Education is a vital component to our 6-8 grade curriculum.  Our goal is to promote educational awareness, promoting living a healthy lifestyle and all which it entails.  Health education is integrated into the basic K3-5th grade curriculum.
