Mark your calendars for July 9 – 17, 2011.
Our next Workcamp is in Ripley,
Tennessee:
In days gone by, cotton brought so much money into Lauderdale County that
folks called it "white gold." Before mechanization, many people were needed to
grow, harvest, and process this crop. Today, modern machinery has eliminated the
majority of those jobs…but the people are still there and need our help.
How do I Sign Up?
In order to sign up for Workcamp, all youth MUST ATTEND a sign-up meeting with one of their parents. There
will be two meetings to choose from: Wednesday, September 8th at
7:00 pm, OR Sunday, September 12th at 9:15 am.
Both new and returning Workcampers (youth and adults)
must attend one of these meetings in the church hall in order to receive a sign
up form and pledge for next summer’s Workcamp. Such forms will only be available
at these meetings, so please plan to attend! No exceptions.
Frequently Asked Questions…
What exactly is a Workcamp?
A Workcamp is a weeklong mission trip to another city, where
we meet up with hundreds of other youth from around the country to help repair
the hearts and homes of people in need. We sleep in the classrooms of a local
high school, eat in their cafeteria, and shower in their locker rooms.
How much does it cost? Approximately $850 for
youth and $225 for adults. (The final amount will be set by our meeting in
December.) Two-thirds of the money we need for this trip goes directly to those
in need through the purchase of home repair materials. The remaining third of
our expenses provides our transportation and minimal room and board so that we
can do the service. We do both parish and individual fundraising – no one gets
left behind, regardless of financial need.
Who can attend a St. Joseph Workcamp? St. Joseph
youth parishioners who will be entering high school in the fall of 2011 (this
year’s 8th graders) through the age of 21, and – as needed – St.
Joseph adult parishioners who are 21 and older, depending upon the number of
youth we bring. (Non-parishioners who have attended with us in the past may also
continue to go.)
Can my friends go? If you have friends from local
churches who are interested in our Workcamp, they may sign up to be on our
waiting list.
What is required? Youth and Adult Workcampers
must:
Attend one of the two signup meetings;
Pay a non-refundable $50.00 deposit
with your signup form, which is due on Monday, September 13, 2010
(late forms will be added to our waiting list);
Attend business, faith, and community building
sessions each month;
Be enrolled in St. Joseph Youth Ministry classes or a
Catholic grade/high school;
Commit to yearlong service & fundraising, and the
guidelines set forth by the "Workcamp Pledge" and the "Workcamp Codes of
Conduct."
